and john kerry fought it out every day about the war. in 2008 we were at war, and barack obama and john mccain fought it out every day in that war. this week when the financial crisis was absolutely on fire, at that debate, they were talking about the wars. this year, president obama does bring it up, he does bring it up at most of his stump speeches, how he explains what he has done and planning on doing talking about the two wars. he doesn't have to say much more because he's speaking to an empty room. the romney campaign has no identifiable position on afghanistan. they have been unwilling and unable to hold up that side of debate and so regardless of what it means for the candidates as a country we are deprived of a national discussion about a war we are in. 70,000 american families having skin in the game right now. we have -- that's part of the reason i'm looking forward to the debates. some ways sort of a post-policy campaign. and you can't do that in a debate, at least unless the debate is really bad. >> this is -- this is billed as a domestic policy debate, but -- and there are so

they wanted to take votes away from john kerry. they got banned by wal-mart for partisan registration efforts. how right-wing do you have to be to get banned by wal-mart? the most important part of all of that is taking democratic demonstrations and ripping them up as they have in the past or as they were in this case in florida changing the addresses so when somebody goes to vote they say i'm sorry you can't vote, you don't live here. even a republican from utah during an investigation of this earlier, said, wow, we didn't do anything like this, he said quote . . . and that's chris cannon republican of utah. did he ever get prosecuted for any of this? no, because after they do the voter fraud, bush won. and the bush administration decided they won't pursue charges. really? how surprising. so mitt romney goes to the same bag of trips. and they have also paid $20,000. they said we use this vendor for signature-gathering services, but have not used them since 2011. i love that quote. because it makes it seem like we haven't used these guys all the way from . . . last year. a

"before i voted against the $87 million, i voted against it." that played into the negative narrative of john kerry being a flip-flop. away47% tape that won't go plays into the stereote of romney as an aloof, detached, uncaring, and not able to show any empathy for people who are not in his social or economic bracket. >> from the politico piece, "rare is the moment where romney sings the praises of the working stiff, the which is pulling a double shift." mike huckabee told the jay leno, "romney reminds you of the guy who fired tear." -- fired you." >> romney is not going to be at the clinton who feels your pain. he is not a great politician. but one of the reasons there is the stereotypes - it did not come out of nowhere -- it came out of tens of millions of dollars of ads by the obama campaign about how he handled people at bain capital. the essence of this is the other series of ads, which say that he wants to reduce taxes on the rich. romney has protested that that is not true, that he wants to reduce the tax rates on the rich. but he is co

with you a little bit. you go back to 2004. john kerry went into the '04 debates down six or seven points in the polls to bush. he ended up losing by two or three points. romney's only down three points. romney needs to carry -- >> but he didn't win. here's the other thing. the average going back to 68, the average undecided has been 13.5%. right now, you have a small undecided electorate out there. you've had $72 million spent by the super pacs attacking the president. what is mitt romney going to say that $72 million hasn't said about the president? is he going to sing -- >> please, no singing. >> isn't it the truth that voters discount what is said in ads, because they already think it's spined and they trust a little bit more what the candidates say? >> people hate negative ads. >> there's a reason why they keep doing it, because they work. >> here's the bottom line, though. annual one of five are watching it. the persuadable voters are watching "american idol" or "dancing with the stars." >> they're going to hear the news the next day. >> the opinion makers, the people that they talk

about it. my take is president clinton had a great advice, and i think it was for john kerry in 2004, which is, always run as if the economy is doing well. his point about that was if you run on the message as romney has that the economy is in the tank and the president has messed it up, you better hope that the economic data is sufficiently bad leading up to the election that that argument that has real trenches. the problem is not that the economic data is so great, it's not. it's clearly not getting particularly worse, and there's a lot of evidence it's getting a little better in terms of jobs and income. that totally removes the steam from the argument of, you've messed everything up. >> sure. in addition to the actual data, there's some polling that indicates that people at least feel like the economy is improving, and the right track/wrong track question. a lot of folks more than six months ago saying we think the country is moving in a good directions. how does that happen? if the numbers aren't dramatically different how can people feel like things are okay. >> you have two p

of the mistakes owe obama made was having john kerry, the senator of massachusetts play mitt romney. he wants to be secretary of state in a second obama administration if he wants to. i bet he was not tough on obama. when romney began seriously responding to obama's attacks and romney began going on the offensive on obama's record i think the president was stunned and said, hey this isn't what john kerry did in the practice debates. what is going on here. i worked for vice president quail he did a good job on his debate in 92, he we briefed it, he practiced. you going on that stage, it's you and he alone, i give mitt romney a lot of credit for last night. jenna: we'll continue to watch your writing inks in "the weekly standard" and all your appearances on fox. thank you for joining us. >> my pleasure. jon: president obama is back on the campaign trail today after less than stellar reviews on his performance in last night's debate. a live look now where the president is speaking any minute at an event in denver. chief white house correspondent ed henry is there and joins us live. the president

in 2004, george w. bush was 6, 7 points ahead of john kerry. he didn't prepare well. that race went from a six-point race to a one-point race in 48 hours. i think barack obama has to be careful. that he doesn't come across irritable or impatient. perform well from a mannerism standpoint. if he doesn't, this race goes a one-point race. >> donna brazile, matt dowd brings up the mannerisms. you were in the al gore camp, everyone thought that he cleaned george bush's clock, but on mannerisms he ended up losing. >> we remember the split screen. al gore was sitting there, rolling his eyes, looking at george bush and basically, he started -- >> did president obama have that vulnerability. >> look, i governor romney speaks in perfect sound bites. i attended many of those republican debates. one thing that's very good at is turning a negative question, a question directed to him into a positive question. he's a very skillful debater. he's been in dress rehearsal for five years. i suspect that governor romney is going to come well prepared to put the president obama on edge. what will the presiden

back and looked at 2004 for example when you had john kerry and george bush. in sort of late september bush was ahead of kerry by about seven points. after the first debate it was a two-point margin because john kerry did very well. then george w. bush came back and did better at the next debate. but he did narrow the gap after that first debate. and in a race that's as closes a this, wolf, that could make all the difference. >> very close in florida and virginia, for example and a debate tonight could impact the undecided voters. thanks, gloria. >> uh-huh. >>> you want to talk about the trial of the century, it could have happened if the raid in pakistan had unfolded differently. and a woman who came close to death in portland, maine's harbor can thank her lucky stars for some alert bystanders ready to help her. everyone has goals. take the steps to reach yours, with us with real advice, for real goals. the us bank wealth management advisor can help you. every step of the way. from big steps, to little steps. since 1863 we've helped guide our clients, so they can take the steps to hel

'll get the voters. the cautionary note in 2004, john kerry was banking on a similar dynamic. he was hoping a lot of people that voted for george w. bush would say, i don't like the things worked out, i'll go with kerry. they split down the middle, enough to let bush stay in office. >> i thought it was interesting that the voters said, i'm changing my vote, i'm changing my vote. that was the predominant message of the obama campaign in 2008, you know, change, we saw on the signs, the banners. you really see that the romney campaign is trying to tap into those voters, really co-op them from the obama campaign. >> greta: i thought it was a two-fer. i thought it was also an effort to get the women. you know, they could have put men in there, found some men. michael, the women vote was important, certainly in '96. >> that struck me as well. this is a running theme with the romney campaign in the homestretch. you know, i took one thing away from that convention in tampa, it was we love you, women, women are special, women are great. a lot of the romney advertising has a very -- has ha

, john kerry with bush, it helps elevate them. there were times it didn't, bob dole first time didn't help him. >> that's a special case, hard to be on stage with president clinton have that turn out well, he is particularly uniquely capable of drawing in an audience. >> people thought that of reagan, he had a bad first outing. >> rag had eagan had an age thi. clinton is extraordinary. i think debates are so different at this moment in a campaign. we have folks calling this campaign the early voting has started, the sense that this is, you know, still sort of a meaningful contribution is up for grabs. >> mike, watching one of the things we've seen, something the polsters warned about, fewer and fewer folks claim the debates are as decisive for them. >> i think they will be. you still have a small undecided. that's what makes the difference. >> they watch, right? that's the hope, you want to be sure they watch. >> yes, i think both sides want that. ratings will be good for the debates, it is a great opportunity, in terms of expectation setting, they're excellent. wouldn't be at this

, probably three debates to john kerry, still beat him in the general so i am less persuaded the debates are foundational to any election. >> woodruff: one other thing i want to ask you about, more attention this week to international news. we are the u.n. general assembly, the speech by the iranian leader, the speech by prime minister netanyahu of israel, the president spoke. that's now in the air, today and yesterday romney's campaigning in sort of a military setting. could foreign policy suddenly rise up and be a bigger issue in this campaign. >> i think it's going to be less of an issue after benjamin netanyahu's speech yesterday. i think there was a concern, a real concern that if netanyahu thought that obama was going to be re-elected, that the likelihood or the possibility of israel attacking the iranian reactor before the election with the expectation they wouldn't get as good a deal in the second term of obama increased. and yesterday i think he took that off the table. i think now he's talking about next spring, and i think so there is less like leehood of that. but it can happ

, here's john kerry. he signed a letter with other senate intelligence committee members for more info on the libya matter. take a listen to this. >> the republicans are working overtime to try to exploit a very normal, run of the course, administrative letter that we agreed to on a bipartisan basis in our committee, simply to get some additional questions put in front of the state department. >> he goes on to say it's all political now. i mean, is this going to become a campaign issue? >> absolutely. you're already seeing it become a big issue on the campaign. particularly on the republican side. of course. the problem, though, is that the house and the senate both adjourned for the rest of this year, up until after the election, earlier this month, and so if this is going to be an issue that republicans wield against the obama ticket it's going to be one that they're going to have to do on the campaign trail. now, that spelled a problem for mitt romney because it's just one of the latest examples of how his campaign has turned its focus away from the economy, the number one issue the

in the state until wednesday for debate preparations. he'll be joined by john kerry who ee playing the role of mitt romney. >>> there's trouble for florida's republican party where a voter registration controversy is brewing. the state's republican party fired a private consulting firm it hired to help register voters. suspicious forms have been discovered in at least five florida counties. >>> those are your top stories. "reliable sources" is up at the top of the hour. now back to "fareed zakaria gps." >>> president ahmadinejad has a history of making broad historical comments about iran, u.s. foreign policy, israel, and much else. so i talked to him about the history of the jews. listen to what he said. you're a student of history, and you said something that i was struck by in one of the gatherings that you were at. you spoke abo israel and you said it has no roots in history in the region. and i was wondering whether you really believe that because as you know, of course, jews have lived there for thousands of years, and we know this, of course, because there are repeated references to

of doing that. and a good opponent which i think he has here. john kerry as his debate, you know, preparation opponent here, that can school him in these things. that i think is important and kerry's quite good. we saw that in 2004. he did quite well in all three of those debates but it should be sobering to romney that kerry did well in those debates but it was not decisive in the election. >> a challenger wins just by being on the stage with an incumbent president, but you have to be ronald reagan and do a there you go again and make something of that in the ensuing campaign and also outside events, obviously, iran, the hostage situation was fatally damaging to jimmy carter. but -- >> you can only make the case that really three presidential elections of the modern elections, the debates really played an important role. 1980 was one of those. >> 1960. >> 1960 and probably gerald ford's election where he said that the eastern europe was not -- or poland was not dominated by the soviet union, made some difference in a close election. but this is going to be a close election. in s

john kerry called for rice to stay on. the republican party has severed ties with a virginia based consulting group it has paid $3 million to this year alone. the group is being investigated for voter fraud in nine counties in florida. right now, my story of the week. the republican bubble trap. if you follow politics, you've probably noticed that polling of the presidential election has swung quite decidedly in the president's favor over the last couple of weeks. the real clear politics polling average now has obama up 4.1 points over mitt romney in national poles. nate silver's prediction model put barack obama's odds of winning the election above 80% for the first time ever. swing state polling just this week seems to confirm the trend. a new quinnipiac "new york times" cbs poll shows surprisingly strong leads for the president. the galup tracking poll shows obama up six points. it's pretty hard to survey the polling data and not come to the conclusion that barack obama is beating mitt romney, that if the election were held today barack obama would win and that romney has a rela

? are they that important? >> absolutely. you know, i, eight years ago, was on the kerry campaign. and john kerry came into that first debate and changed the entire dynamic of that race. we were eight points down. and we came out of the debates tied or even a little bit ahead. so absolutely, debates are very important. it's the first time that voters really get to see these two candidates side by side. and to compare not just their styles, because i know a lot of people will be talking about style tonight. but really their visions. the details, the specifics, where they want to take the country. how they're answering some of these tough questions, and whether they're giving real answers. so absolutely. i think mitt romney has an opportunity to shake up the race tonight. you know, obviously, you know, expectations, both sides have been playing the expectations game. the reality is that challengers win the first debate more often than not. you know, you might think that's me playing expectations, but that's also a fact. and we know that mitt romney is a good debater. the president's a pretty good debate

. he's got senator john kerry playing mitt romney in the debate preps. the president did have a chance to talk to a few people. he delivered some pizzas to the local obama for reelection campaign office out there. very nice of them. delivering pizza to the workers. he also talked about not getting out much. take a listen. >> basically they're keeping me indoors all the time. it's a drag. they're making me do my homework. >> wow, wow. this is john. he's doing his homework. >> also you have some new polls for us. where are we seeing the candidates now? >> nationally, this race is extremely close. four polls came out yesterday over the last 4 hours. let's talk about ours. cnnorc.com. 47 for mitt romney. that three-point advantage for the president is -- what is the key issue on wednesday night in this is about domestic issues. take a look at the economy numbers. about as close as you can get. one point between the candidates. that's why so much is on the line here. while the national polls are tight, the president has an advantage. >> that matters a lot. the swing states really matter. >>

for three days of prep. senator john kerry will play the role of mitt romney. both sides are trying to avoid those infamous debate moments. >> you're likable enough, hillary. >> thank you so much. >> reporter: and there was that bet. >> 10,000 bucks? $10,000 bet? >> reporter: but so much of it rests with the candidate. the hbo film "game change," strategist nicolle wallace was depicted trying to help sarah palin prepare for interviews and a debate and the national stage. >> it wasn't my fault. i wasn't properly prepped. >> you weren't properly prepped because you wouldn't listen to us. you never listen to your advisers. >> reporter: takes you back, doesn't it? president obama looking to lock in his lead. and for romney, many political strategists arguing this first debate will be make-or-break as george pointed out. given the poll numbers in those key battlegrounds. >> okay, david, thank you. >>> it certainly takes nicolle wallace back. she's our newest political analyst. there in "game change." >> my ptsd is kicking in. >> try to go back for a second. you and i have both been inside the deb

by which they want it back and signed by john kerry and barbara boxer and others, by november 13, which won't escape your notice. that is after the presidential election. guys, thank you. >> thank you, megyn. megyn: fox news has confirmed some concerning details about this incident, which has not generated a lot of investigation from the rest of the media. just ahead, former chief of staff under president bush, andy card weighs in how it would've been different if his former boss, george w. bush, was still in the white house. and new concerns about taxpayer dollars on what some call a second cylinder. wait until you hear about what happens when fox asked to speak with the ceo. also, locked up on a probation violation. an interesting ruling in this man's case. the man said to be behind the 15 minute internet video being blamed in part for rights overseas. the real question over the first amendment applies to those that we dislike as well as those we like megyn: the probation violation against the man allegedly behind the anti-muslim film the lead to some of the protest that we have seen in

. they do not do it anymore. john kerry said maybe it is time to stop these racial preferences. the democratic leadership council was inching down that road. that is all gone. this is why we get so demonized if we ever raise our voices against affirmative action. part of it was there was an incredibly bitter campaign in california over proposition 29 which banned racial preferences in state programs in 1996. really bitter. i think it is fair to say there is an awful lot of demonizing going on against the supporters of proposition 209. it was bloody. i think politicians look at that and say i do not want to get into that. joe lieberman backed off. even jesse jackson is attacking me. i better rethink this. >> other questions here? >> this gentleman here in the front. wait till a microphone get to you otherwise we will not hear a word you're saying. this is working its way up the southwest freeway. there we go. >> better than the metro. >> i apologize if this is very obvious to everybody in the room. in the defense a marriage act case, where does the bipartisan ago and pfizer grou

election day in a raz orthin race between president bush and john kerry. three years after 9/11 it served as a reminder of the terrorist threat and strategists in both parties believed helped president bush. more recently the term october surprise has come to mean a seismic event in the fall of an election year though most have centered around foreign policy others have been about the economy like in 2008. when the economy imploded, john mccain's advisers say his campaign collapsed along with it and never recovered. historians say in order for an october surprise to have a real 11th hour impact it has to feed into a narrative that already exist, whether it's carter's ineffectiveness or questions about mccain's credentials on the economy. >> it's not so much that suddenly eureka this is so surprising, so amazing, but rather people nod yes, this is where we thought things were going. >> dana bash joins us live from washington. first of all, i guess people will take a look at friday's numbers, the jobs numbers and do we think that could be a, the october surprise that people are waiting for,

dlidded that john kerry even is he working with barack obama on the debates is going to lead an investigation to actually see what happened. we need to know what the house knew and why we did not beef up security at our embassies. the fact that this anti-muslim film came out in january we used that to blame the attacks in benghazi? >> marc, why the detect though fox news reporting 24 hours afterwards and our sources confirming that and in my mind i'm looking at the calendar september 11th. five days later have you secretary rice up on the sunday talk shows on five different shows vociferously defending, this mark? >> again, the president of the united states within 24 hours called this an act of terror. we knew this was a terrorist attack. we didn't know who did it and whether it was planned. it turns out that, again, the terrorists saw this it spontaneous protest against the video, the despicable video. they ran home and got their march -- mortars. only seven hours that they used those mortars. >> up in the debates? >> i believe this is going to be a problem. as ben stein sa

senator john kerry, who has been there himself. >> what happens during these mock debates? >> they do not talk a lot about what happens during these. what they try to do is try to set a situation that is as realistic as possible for the actual debate. they do it at the same time and night the debate will take place. they set up a set just like it will look like in denver. they are used the environment. they have somebody to play the moderator and ask questions. obama does not like sound bites. they force him to give answers. they do whatever they can to simulate the debate situation. >> you quote a former chief of staff to boast -- to vice- president alkyl and joe -- al gore and joe biden. let me read some of his points. -- can you elaborate? >> sure. he is not really specifically using this advice for romney or obama, although i have no doubt many of these tips are being passed on to president obama. it is interesting. that was my first short summary of what he has to say. he went into more debt -- depth about each one of those things. impressions of the debate are formed very early.

and the democrats, john kerry and the early 90s, joe lieberman in the early 90s and others said maybe it is time to stop these racial preferences. the democratic leadership council was inching down that road. but that is all gone. i've spoken to republican politicians, why is that? the answer is we get so if we ever raise their voices against affirmative action it is just not worth the cost, not worth the hassle. part of it ironically was an incredibly bitter campaign in california over proposition 209, which gave preferences in 1996. really better than i think it is fair to say there is not a lot of demonizing and demagogy going on against the supporters of proposition 209 against the people opposing affirmative action. it was bloody and i think politicians sort of look at that and say i don't want to get into that. and in fact, joe lieberman backed off his questions about affirmative action after a result of that campaign he said that was one of the reasons he was backing off. my gosh can't even jesse jackson is attacking me. i better rethink this. >> other questions here? yes, right here, th

or not that was -- it was dick kated by politics the initial response. we see today senator john kerry, aemocrat the senate asking the right questions. these are questions that others memberenof thee and house are also sking. so ihi you ought to expect we will see extensive hearings and investigation on this>> now the week that f agents who have bnt tselibya to investigate, they still have not beenble to get to the scene of thisro actionn bengzi. they're basically holed hundreds of miles away in tripoli, the capital. you have new information? >> that's right, wolf. so you've got a handful -- u've got some fbi agents in tripoli waiting todeploo benghazi. yoveot dozs of other fbi agents in countries -- in third countries waiting visas to get into libya te to go to benghazi. i will tell you, wolf, talking to law enforcement officials as recently as this afternoon, it's been today's day 18 since the attack. and the point made to me, we may not evgoen now. what would be the point? what are we going to learn there? and how tragic is that? we've lost four americans including the united states ambassador, and the

, sometimes in a word, smug, so we're told both senator john kerry playing mitt romney and senator rob portman playing the president have been pretty tough, pretty tough on the candidates in these practice sessions to try to help them prepare for what can be pretty stressful high pressure moments on that debate stage. >> i can't imagine. and specifically in colorado, one of the big issues there, immigration, mitt romney making news in talking to the denver post that, you know, if and when he's elected that he would not revoke that executive order that president obama recently issued, you know, to protect some illegal immigrants and documented immigrants who came here as young children. let me quote, in romney's words, the people who have received the special visa that the president has put in place, which is a two year visa should expect it will continue to be valid. i'm not going to take something that they have purchased. what does that tell you, when you read into that, is he marching toward the center here? >> reporter: well, it tells you that he's politically being smart. it also tells yo
